Fail2ban works really well.
Will talk about Linux, plants, space, retro games, and anything else I find interesting.
Fail2ban works really well.
Basically. It’s just Ubuntu server with some really good niceties.
nice.
I need to get something dead simple/no cloud etc… Just shopping around.
Do you use any sort of RAID? Recently, ive been using an old SSD, but back 9ish years ago, I used to backup everything with a RAID system, but it took too much time to keep up.
I have to agree, the community seems to come and go. Some apps have daily updates and some have been updated only once. If I were to start a new server, I would probably still pick yunohost, but remove some of the older apps as one offs. The lemmy one for example is stuck on a VERY old version. However the GotoSocial app is updated every time there is an update in the main repo.
Still super good support for something that is free and open source. Stable too :) but sometimes stability means old.
Honestly after using docker and containerization for more than a decade, my home setups are just yunohost or baremetal (a small pi) with some periodic backups. I care more about my own time now than my home setup and I want things to just be stable. Its been good for a couple of years now, without anything other than some quick updates. You dont have to deal with infa changes with updates, you dont have to deal with slowdowns, everything works pretty well.
At work its different Docker, Kubernetes, etc… are awesome because they can deal gracefully with dependencies, multiple deploys per day, large infa. But ill be the first to admit that takes a bit more manpower and monitoring systems that are much better than a small home setup.
No union I’ve ever been part of required me being in it in order to work at a place. It was always optional. So strange.
The mod situation has always been strange. Mods can NEVER be changed once a community is made (unless a super mod gets involved). Makes it easy for individuals to control entire communities without any say within the communities themselves (within reddit).
Lemmy is a bit better as you can just up and leave an instance community that is being strange. But its a similar issue. Voting per year (or just periodically) a mod could have good results…if done right. Im actually not sure what the best way to do it is, but having overlord mods is not the correct way thats for sure.
If the US federal gov workers get pushed out, I wonder what the implications will be on people? Thats the most “secure” job in the US by some standards.
I know the unions are already prepping and fed government shut downs are imminent.
I believe it was the /r/games ? Its been a loong while.
I once got banned from a community for sharing a zelda decompilation project on archive.org. Others have reported issues with reddit and banning people for sharing nintendo power magazines. Fun times.
Modern day internet, you can talk about things, but you have to talk around certain companies, like nintendo or else risk getting banned/taken down. But with the fediverse, i can own more of the system. If world ever goes down, I can still use my personal instance to communicate for instance.
I worked at a place with every other week Fridays off. It was amazing. People could actually go to Dr appts. Actually made us much more productive.
True and seeing it happen once (the famous one) makes it likely.
Yep I remember. Its an estimate…kinda. there were many reasons given but at the time it felt bad. Like they were trying to hide the counts…which I still think they do.
Nice I’ll get a mirror. Don’t trust GitHub + emulation nowadays.
I’ve heard the argument somewhere that allergies may have had a say. If someone was allergic to local flora/fauna it creates a force to push humans outside their traditional living places. I’m not sure how true it is but it resonates.
Oh man smash. Still love that game.
Some good stuff there. Not ominous at all.
