You’ve really misunderstood, I’m afraid. The Knight is more than just a component of a Trebuchet piece, it really is the kernel of that entity, upon which the Trebuchet functions build. The Knight, it is true, is little use without a Trebuchet or some other manner of catapult. The Trebuchet is what completes the Knight into a fully functional piece. And it is indeed a marvel of engineering and not to be taken for granted. But the Trebuchet without a Knight to fling, is a motive without an object. It is a collection of engineering genius with the function of an incorporeal doorstop. In fact many other strategies are added onto the Knight, together with the Trebuchet, to make it truly strategic. But the Knight is the true kernel of the piece.

That is why, though not wanting to diminish the great contribution of the Trebuchet, I think for a short name for the piece as a whole, Knight is appropriate.

In a sense, it can mean anything you want it to. In another sense, it can mean anything the listener/reader interprets it as. Most useful though is when you mean the same meaning that the listener understands.

And for “accepted/official meaning”, that’s just a community all agreeing on a meaning. Optionally with a recognised group (e.g. dictionary writer) affirming certain meanings as accepted in the community.

Not American here, but I still have much hope that the fate of America is in the hands of her people. My biggest fear at Trump’s election is if it inspires more of the nation to hate and anger - because the president is your leader in that way.

But you see, Trump won because a lot of people voted for him. If the American people can find a new love for the poor, for fairness between worker and manager, for people who look and act differently: then I have great hope for the nation’s recovery.
