  • The battle for work-life balance is in a far better state in most western economies (including the US) than it is in many developing economies like India. The middle class in India is like 2 generations old. The grandparents of the current middle class are still around and they remember how poor they were and how much has changed. Basically , for many Indian workers, hard work and perseverance on its own (from their perspective at least) has actually been a path to a better life. That social contract hasn’t yet broken the way it has in the west.

The problem with this is that it results in the workplace culture in the private sector in India being utterly abysmal. Workplaces where the work expectations align with what this toxic boss is aiming for are incredibly common to the point of being the norm. Somewhat comparable to western economies a century ago. The fact that such overwork is not actually productive beyond a point is not an idea that has penetrated into the culture to any appreciable degree.

There is awareness of this of course, but change on this scale takes time.

  • I just looked it up and…

SF6 has 23,500 times greater global warming potential (GWP) than CO2 as a greenhouse gas (over a 100-year time-frame) but exists in relatively minor concentrations in the atmosphere. Its concentration in Earth’s troposphere reached 11.50 parts per trillion (ppt) in October 2023, rising at 0.37 ppt/year.[8] The increase since 1980 is driven in large part by the expanding electric power sector, including fugitive emissions from banks of SF6 gas contained in its medium- and high-voltage switchgear. Uses in magnesium, aluminium, and electronics manufacturing also hastened atmospheric growth.[9] The 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which came into force in 2005, is supposed to limit emissions of this gas. In a somewhat nebulous way it has been included as part of the carbon emission trading scheme. In some countries this has led to the defunction of entire industries.[10]

Umm wtf? Why are we selling this stuff in compressed air cans ? Even methane is “only” 30x more potent than CO2 .

In this particular story, if there’s any truth to it then it’s basically extortion. They could have just said that due to their usage profile they will need to switch to an enterprise license for the next billing period . Instead they tried to extort it within 24h lol.

And of course you have to buy a whole year of service (lol). This last thing is a symptom of a degenerate market with few competitors. No company that fears competition would try to pull that stunt.
