I want to present my files - wherever they may be - to all sorts of different applications which let me interact with them in different ways.
Only some self-hosted software grants us this portability.
I’d say almost everything is already covered with Samba shares and docker bind mounts. With Samba shares the data is presented across network to my Kodi clients, the file browser on my phone, and the file browsers of all my computers. And with docker bind mounts those files are presented to any services that I want to run.
That’s not true, it didn’t work that way. You could set it for individual notifications and even have custom colors. I would have it orange for K9 emails and green for text messages and red for a missed call… it was extremely versatile and much better than screen always on which I always disable on my phones because it looks bad and is a distraction in my opinion and it uses more battery.
I bought it before learning it had online DRM, so I refunded it and pirated it. Fuck them.

Strawman. Where did I claim advertising wasn’t previously manipulative? I never made those claims. I’m concerned with the scale and effectiveness provided by these data pools. Don’t equate misleading marketing campaigns with the level of scale and effectiveness this offers. Again, see the Cambridge Analytica scandal for reference. It’s been proven that they can control a large demographic to sway an election. The means and effectiveness have never before been seen, and were made entirely possible by data collection. That’s the reason the data is so valuable, and that’s the reason so many resources are being poured into it. Eventually they will be able to use it to set opinion and control the majority of society.
I think we will eventually see tooling for data-poisoning, and it will become a valid counter-measure for maintaining privacy.
You’re thinking little picture, your data specifically isn’t worth anything. Do you really think these multi-billion dollar companies are investing these crazy resources into data to see your porn history or sell you a different brand of toothpaste?
Your data with everyone else’s data is worth a lot because they can use it to manipulate and control society. The Cambridge Anyltica scandal was a proof of concept… and you are not impervious to it. Some of us don’t want to participate in fueling that machine, but congrats on bringing yourself to not care about it I guess.
It isn’t, you can get SFF PCs for as little as $75 on eBay that have Quicksync CPUs and will run circles around a RPi, especially if you have to do any transcoding. They are also really power efficient… 7-20W idles.

SBCs really should no longer be considered for selfhosting unless you are A) in an extremely power constrained environment like an off-grid RV or vanlife situation or B) clustering
Jerboa is also missing what I consider a necessary and basic feature of setting a default comment sort. If you want to see comments sorted by top then you have to make 2 extra clicks in every post you click into, it’s extremely frustrating.
I like Jerboa, and I’ve even donated to them, but it’s unusable in the current state. If you don’t care about changing comment sorting, I guess it’s fine, but I do.
Some dashboards can do this, check out homepage as one example. Glances is a great tool if you want to create your own. Really you should not rely on checking status pages for health but instead set up monitoring and notifications.
I use healthchecks.io and smtp_to_telegram to be instantly notified of SMART failures, storage limits, backup and other script failures, and if docker services go down. As with all selfhosting though, there are plenty of other options for both the monitoring system and the notification system.

Lenova Legion V, last time I checked a few years ago they had better screens and better thermals and were quieter then the other contender which was a G15.

Are ya’ll not encrypting your backups before uploading them? Use borg or restic to make proper encryptable and compressable backups before sending them.

I agree, and their reasoning to do it was insulting. The crypto bullshit and the stories bullshit along with the SMS decision was enough for me. I’ve uninstalled it, and haven’t missed it. It’s not a good app if you care about privacy anyway, there are better apps that don’t require a phone number to use them.
