  • That’s not how that works. If enough people boycott a service and show their displeasure, companies have to change something depending on how many people participate. It’s the same thing when it comes to climate change, veganism, whatever. Every bit counts and subtracting oneself from all responsibility with this mentality is a little naive, imho.

You’re bound to have a different experience as an employee, though. Can’t comment on that. However, things would very likely change for the better, even for you, if Amazon’s shady business practises were shunned even more than they already are. It’s insane how much of their wrongdoings have been exposed over the past years and how little people actually care

  • I hear you. The thing is, the communities I mod are quite niche (in relation to Lemmy’s population, that is) and apart from the corresponding subreddits I used to lurk on for years, I’m not really exposed to anything new that would prompt me to make new discussion posts and memes. I’ve watched all video essays there are about the games, I played through all of them repeatedly, new content is not on the horizon for any one of them. The best thing about them is the discussion in the community which has been missing ever since I created the communities in the first place.

Believe me: I’ve tried. But keeping three separate communities alive all on your own without community members ever feeling the need to contribute gets exhausting and doesn’t feel worthwhile. So making my own content, which I do when I have a cool idea, feels like more of a loss when the engagement is just as high, sometimes lower, as with content off reddit.

Lurkers will be lurking, I guess

  • I guess it’s to be expected when most content on platforms these days is not entirely new and original but stripped from other places. It is interesting to see reposts on here, though, given that Lemmy’s population is so small. Then again, there’s likely lots of overlap in people’s interests here, considering that Lemmy isn’t as mass-centered as other contemporary social media platforms.

  • This debate had been brought up back when Atomic Heart was bound to be released. Many people argued back then that it’s fine buying the game since the dev team had completely relocated to Cyprus (very popular country for Russians to move to next to Kazakhstan and numerous European countries), thus not funding the Russian government through taxes.

However, given that the dev team still lives in Russia this time, there’s not much to debate. The figures the author mentions check out and there’s no other way to put it, really, that gamers are, in part at least, funding Russia.

Sure, the company might have opposing views to Russia, but firstly, they haven’t moved to a different country, which is at least a little concerning, and secondly, are a legal entity in Russia, so they pay them regardless of motivation.
