So two-part question here:
If you’ve played Watch Dogs: Legion, did you like it?
And especially, did you like it for the story?
This makes me think the game is not primarily about the story: https://opencritic.com/game/7405/watch-dogs-legion
I played WD2 and enjoyed that quite a bit though never finished it.
I want the next game I play on my PC (via Steam, etc…) to have a great story. Recommendations greatly appreciated.
Other games I’ve played with what I thought were great stories: Psychnoauts 2, Portal 2, Soma (though I’m not really into scary games), Firewatch, Metro all, The Talos Principle
Cheers,
Well, if you can pick it up for 10 bucks or less, give it a shot but the story will not blow you away. I played WD2 and legion last year and there was a significant downgrade in story and characters between them. Gameplay was fine but I liked the spider drones in WD2 better than the new drones there.
It also felt much more political and “modern”, similarly to what they seem to have done for FC6. So depending on your age and maybe political opinions, this might be a pro or a con. I agree with the notion that it becomes very repetitive too.
Other people here suggested Uncharted and Witcher, definitely go there instead if you can!!
I played Watch Dogs Legion two years after its release and I doubt it has changed much since then, it was an unfinished mess without much story.
Yah, thanks. Was it fun at least? Like, as much fun as wd2?
It had some fun elements, but it’s not comparable to wd2 or wd1. It’s like they ran out of money halfway through development and just released the game as is. If you really want to play it, wait until it’s on sale somewhere and don’t be disappointed, you were warned.
If you’re looking for an open world game with a great story, my top suggestion is Horizon: Zero Dawn. It’s a fascinating world with a certain secret you eventually learn that might break you (like it did me). It’s the last game to really make me cry and contemplate life
Yes! That’s looked interesting and I think it’s on Steam now, right? Added to my list - thanks!
You could try Cyberpunk 2077, Dishonored 1&2, Prey before giving any money to Ubisoft.
Cool. Is Cyberpunk stable now? I heard some bad things early on.
Yeah it’s pretty good now, it’s not the greatest game like people hyped it to be but it’s a decent one
It is and I never have stability issues on PC. Bugs yes and the 3 years update have getting rid of the most annoying ones.
Your account is marked as a bot. Is that intentional?
Hum it isn’t I’ll check it out thx.
Edit : fixed, thank you didn’t pay attention and tick the box by mistake.
CyberPunk
My son keeps telling me I should play that and someone else here did too. I will add this to my queue for sure.
DA: Origins has been in my list forever and I just… I dunno … didn’t quite sede it as my type of game. I’ve been wrong about that many times though so next time it’s on sale, I’ll grab it.
Played the Deus Ex series and all of the Valve games many times.
Thief looks interesting. Thanks!
You’re welcome. You could also try Systemshock 1&2 it’s the same era as Deus Ex.
I will admit by today’s standards Origins is a bit dated, and it can feel janky but I think it was one of bioware’s better games in a single package
6 origins that each have their own effect on the story and has some enduring characters - it is a good fantasy story that has your character choices play out in the final stretches and it does feel good seeing results of that play out in way that, to me at least felt meaningful.
by law i have to mention Disco Elysium. one of the best modern CRPGs you could ever play. its story and setting is fantastic. don’t buy it pirate it if you can the developer studio fell prey to a hostile takeover scheme and the original developers were forced out, they won’t see a cent of it.
don’t know anything about watch dogs legion though it seemed like your average ubisoft triple A (aka shit) so i haven’t played it.
Something about DE’s interface seemed kind of… off putting to me but it sounds like I should check it out. I’ll go watch someone play it the first few minutes. Thanks
I want to add, it took me a while to warm up to Disco Elysium, but once I got past a day or 2, I ended up being compeled into its world.
It is probably one of the best games of failure not impeding progress and baring a few mission critical paths, it is a game where failure can have a more entertaining outcome than success.
Although there is a “Golden Path” to success, there is a lot of variance to get the there.
the first few minutes is a lizard voice monologuing in a black void lmao. you are definitely not going to play it for its gameplay value.
Elden Ring, but you have to either assemble the story yourself or watch VaatiVidya’s lore vids. Crazy stories all crashing into each other, I think only 2-3 questlines end happily 😂😭
Stick to your story, eh. Thanks
Definitely not.
I’d recommend Bioshock 1 and 2.
Should have said I’ve played those and the 3rd one too. Great stories, for sure.
No for watch dogs, not the third one at least but you can play the first and second they are cool.
But if you really want a story, the only answer is: A Plague Tales
You can play the second one (Requiem) without knowing the first game but you will be a little less “invested in the story”.
You can find the two Plague Tales for cheap and they will leave a mark on your soul. They are from a French studio and have that French touch. Be aware, these games will break you, you’ll cry for days and won’t be able to forget the music, characters and story for months.
Or else, Cyberpunk is awesome, specially with mods.
Have never heard of this Plague Tales series, so will definitely check them out. Merci beaucoup.
Mafia Trilogy, and especially Mafia II, are all good games.
Thomas Was Alone is something different. Puzzle platformer with a nice narrative on top.
The problem with Watch Dogs Legion is that all of the player characters are all procedurally generated, so while there’s plenty of plot, it’s pretty threadbare as a story.
Came here to say this. It hugely weakened any investment in characters and story, for me.
I would not recommend playing legion for the story. Or, arguably, at all - but particularly not for the story.
Witcher 3 has a pretty dope story. I also enjoyed The last of us, even though I am not much into shooters or zombie games.
Baldur’s gate 3 and actually the other Larian studio games are also having good stories. Yakuza is supposed to have a nice story too, even GTA5 has a cool story.
I tried Witcher 2 and never finished it. Just not my thing, I concluded.
I had no idea GTA had a story at all, so thanks for that idea.
I got sleeping dogs for less than 2 dollars the other day. About 15-20 hours of gameplay but really fun and well done.
“The invincible” is very much in the spirit of firewatch with amazing scenery to explore. I cant remember my exact play time, but i finished it in a weekend.
No on Watch Dogs 3. For great story I would suggest these:
God of War (2022)
Red Dead Redemption 2
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Cyberpunk 2077 has a great story if you’re into the cyberpunk genre. It’s got its own spin on a collection of really great cyberpunk stories rolled into one narrative. It’s the closest thing outside of the books themselves that makes one feel like they are in something written by William Gibson himself.
Ok. You said the magic words for me: William Gibson. I’m in.
No idea why I never made that connection in my own head before, but thanks!
The main crux of the plot is kinda like Johnny Mnemonic. Except the data in V’s head that’s slowly killing him/her is Keanu Reeves instead of the cure for some disease.
