I can understand women and trans people being afraid of Metro and other transit, especially if they’ve had bad experiences in the past. It’s more dangerous for some people to be alone in public than others.
Saying that as someone who’s been called slurs on public transit, but also is usually perceived as a fem guy. My biggest concern is definitely still getting sick (N95s every single trip).

I can confirm I’ve seen their ads in person in multiple places in Los Angeles. North Hollywood had a billboard near the Noho gateway sign, and I think the red line? had a bunch of ads on the inside and outside of some of the trains a year or two ago.
This is terrifying looking, just activates every part of my hind brain.
That’s the main problem, you either spend a lot up front or a lot in random, unpredictable intervals.
I’m really fortunate to be able to rely on public transit despite living in LA, because I can’t imagine paying for everything associated with a car on top of rent.
It’s definitely an understandable way to feel after a bad accident. It’s really fortunate nobody was hurt! You’re a young and inexperienced driver, there’s a reason as a group y’all cost more to insure, lol. So it’s definitely something that’s common, and plenty more people (like me) have only avoided similar accidents through dumb luck.
Is giving up a car completely something that’s feasible for your location and lifestyle? Will you be able to get to work, meet with friends, and engage with your hobbies while relying on public transit, a bike, etc? If you can answer yes to all those questions, then giving up driving regularly might be feasible for you. If you can’t, then unfortunately you will have to either drive or rely on other people to drive you.
If it’s not practical to give up driving, I would really encourage you to take a defensive driving class. It will help you internalize the things you can be doing to avoid accidents before they happen. And if you do give up driving, keep your license renewed! It’s a total pain in the ass to get a license a second time, and there are times it’s practical to have one.
Oh, and what about when they hunt down anyone in a car by helicopter and blow them up? What then?
Do you think there’s a major transit stop every half mile in LA? Those are the only residences affected by this. Like, that would be nice if we did have that many, but that’s not the situation here. We’re already a fucking parking lot, we don’t need more parking spaces. We need housing and public transit.
Parking requirements have already been removed for projects located within half a mile of major transit stops under the 2022 state law AB 2097. The new city council proposal could expand that policy to the entire city.
Sounds like this has already been in place for years in select areas without the apocalypse happening.
We need to kill so much car related bullshit here so, so badly. Every time an area gets more pedestrian friendly the NIMBYs shriek about the 12.5 seconds added to their commute in exchange for not living in the middle of a freeway.
Just this morning, someone in a Discord I’m in (who wouldn’t just fake stories) was explaining how someone they knew had a psychotic break on psychedelics, and, in the ambulance, narrated the paramedics’ childhoods with disturbing accuracy
I think it’s entirely possible this person is being honest while also just not having a firm grasp over what actually happened, due to having a psychotic break from psychedelics. The paramedic simply agreeing to whatever they said (if the conversation did happen—I’ve been unsure whether a conversation I thought I had was real or not just from smoking too much weed) could have been interpreted as much deeper and more profound than it was.
None of this requires ill intent. The mind is just incredibly bad at making and retrieving memories in the way we want (infallible, like a video) even when you aren’t on drugs.
Yeah, the problem doesn’t begin and end at the train/bus station. Anyone afraid to be taking Metro alone due to harassment is probably also going to be afraid of walking on the street alone, too, which is also an issue.
