  • I got a couple of apps I’d recommend in a heartbeat.

Spectdroid is a spectrogram app. Its unreasonable how often I’m using this app. I got some mild tinnitus that comes and goes and this app allows me to find out if I got some actual weird buzzing I’m the house or if it’s just in my head.

And LocalSend is an amazing app for sending files between various devices and OSes over a local network. I no longer need to set up file shares, plug in my phone to a computer, or use cloud storage just to transfer over some files.

  • I’ll give it a go, didn’t see the previous give always. The Invincible would be sweet to play in full. I tried the demo and the story had me intrigued and the art style is really cool. Similar in vibe to Red Matter and other “everyone’s vanished” mysteries. I’m dumb and can’t read. Out of the options there I’d love to relieve some old Tomb Raider nostalgia!

On another note, I recently cleaned up a pretty gnarly PC case. When my friend was in need to a PC I threw together some old parts for him. The last couple of years got pretty dark for him, and his flat was turned into more or less a drug den. But he’s recently kicked everyone out and reclaimed it. I was in need of a case to build a server in and he asked if I wanted the old one back as he was able to buy a new computer for himself.

All in all it took a bit over 1 litre of isopropyl alcohol, some elbow grease, and a water hose :P

  • Mm yes, reddit started with out with tens of thousands of users over night.

I think the situation here on lemmy is pretty comparable to early reddit. People forget it started out as mostly a nerdy programmer centric site as well, and then grew from there. It’s a bit jarring to see people here insisting on artificially creating communities and pushing/guiliting people into posting more just to bring the numbers up. “the narwhal bacon’s at midnight” (although it was always cringe) started because reddit was a niche site less known than 4chan to begin with, so it was just a nonsensical dog whistle.

Do I miss the focused subreddits around specific topics? Sure, but I also think they will come naturally with time if lemmy survives just as they did with reddit. And the whole reason we’re here today to begin with is because of an unsatiable hunger for growth.
