  • I think the posts along these lines are already two steps too far away from the vibes.

Nobody is even considering the number being prime, it just looks like there can’t be a round number of one against the other because one is big and ends in seven and the other is relatively small and ends in 1.

If you’re even thinking about divisibility rules you’re doing it wrong. As in, your brain is too impacted by maths to see what the numbers look like from instinct alone. There’s no thinking in this, they just look weird together.

  • But I can wrap my head around that 51 is divisible by seventeen because of 21 and seven plus something that deals with the remaining 30 somewhere.

I know that’s not how it works, but as you say it fixes my vibes when I see the 21 hiding inside the 51.

I’ll say this: the other thing that makes this one a hard pill to swallow is that 17 looks way too big, and my vibes fix doesn’t address that, but hey.

  • I think it helps to remember that 3 times 7 is 21. When I think about that it looks less wrong.

It’s the stupid seven multiplication table. Whatever glitch in human software makes it look so much less intuitive than all the others messes with so many other things that should be easy. I swear I struggle every time I have to look at it. I had to double check seven times three multiple times right now.

  • Or, you know, they could keep using Google Keep.

There’s a corner of the FOSS community that is all like “you should jump ship on literally any software that is not clean and pure of corporate interests” but also “can’t blame FOSS software for not being good unless you’re in the process of making your own”. It’s… kinda confusing.

  • Of those I only object to MOBA, which is another generic word salad thing. The rest at least tell you what games the game in question is like.

I never accepted “roguelite”, though. It’s good wordplay, but the pedantry underlying the term rubs me the wrong way.

I’m aware of the history, too, but the thing is, it doesn’t even make sense anymore. The term originates at a time where a game does one thing, or maybe one thing per level. Every game now does the things “immersive sims” are supposed to do. Immersive sims are just ARPGs that happen to model themselves mechanicaly or thematically after Deus Ex or Thief. By the numbers Deus Ex has more in common with Mass Effect than Dishonored, by far.

  • The new System Shock remake is very cool and quite underappreciated. The original is far more dated than HL1, IMO. System Shock 2 is playable, though. You could also give the Thief games a whirl, if you played Dishonored. I think along that trajectory you could also go revisit the Hitman games. Hitman 1 and Thief are two takes on the same idea that were happening more or less at the same time. I was more of a Hitman guy at the time, and I think that first game, clunky as it is to control, was mind-blowing.

Are you looking for FPSs specifically? Blizzard is threatening to delist Warcraft 1 and 2 from GOG, so it’s a great time to revisit those. 2 holds up.

If you’re only looking into FPSs, I’d revisit Quake 2. It’s the missing link between HL1 and the arcadey Doom-style early FPSs, and if you have the hardware, the path-traced remake looks really nice.

A few hot takes here: 1) I know I’m in the minority, but I love HL1 and could never get through HL2. The vehicle levels suck, as do the more open areas. The more contained original with its interconnected “Aliens meets Die Hard” setup was so groundbreaking, HL2 is meandering and slow by comparison.

    1. I know what you mean about the gravity gun, but also, the Portal devs weren’t there for that, but also the puzzle design in Portal is more Valve-y than the stuff in the original Narbacular Drop. I don’t know where that lands in reality.

    2. I hate the name “immersive sim”. What is being “simmed”? Why is it immerisve? Isn’t Halo immersive? I was immersed AF. And it’s simming at least as much stuff as Dishonored, I assure you. It’s such a dumb name, just words mashed together. Ditto for “character action game”. Unless your action game features exclusively rocks, it’s “character action”, that means nothing.

  • I mean, up to you. As I said above, it’s not like owning one of those means actively supporting Facebook or whatever. I find the whole “engaging with these companies products implies endorsing them” capitalist view of money as support very strange, but I know it’s popular these days, particularly in anglo cultures.

But like I said above, it’s not like a Meta account used for a Quest used on PC will give Meta any view on your data, or like they would have made any money out of you from a device they built at a massive loss that you’re then purchasing used. But hey, you do you. There are other older, crappier headsets you can buy used, but Quest 2 listings out there start at sixty bucks, which is absolutely nuts for what they are.

  • We had enough of them at a time that “the expats” was a relevant group of people you needed to refer to for specific things. Language lessons, HR support, what have you. I definitely heard the anglo guys refer to themselves as that frequently, and that then became the word people used.

I had a chip on my shoulder about telling people I was a migrant, but I was pretty alone on that. The anglo guys mostly said they were “expats”.

  • It was used colloquially, for sure… by rich corporate migrants that didn’t want to self-ID as migrants. Or at least by the HR people and corpo consultants handling the international relocations and avoding the taboo word.

Which is what the previous post is saying and it certainly matches my experience as one of the “expats”. I always self-identified as a migrant myself, though.

  • I am genuinely considering moving away from English language social media altogether. I find my native language media… kind of exhausting, honestly, but it’s still better than what the last Trump term triggered, so… maybe? It has the side advantage of countering some of the whole cultural imperialism, because hey, I’ll suffer it from US coastal elites, but I desperately need an alternative if it’s going to be coming form Elon Musk and Donald Trump, so…

  • That’s fair. I do see how it being nominally a new IP instead of a numbered sequel the ways it overlaps with Persona feel like a bit of treading water.

For me there is way more than enough to separate it, though. The bonkers story alone and the super political spin on it are crazy, plus the gameplay ends up being different enough.

But yeah, it’s pretty much one of those. Still better than going full action RPG like Square has done with its franchises, though.
