Why not start with classic films in your wife’s first or second languages?

Almost every language has a few films that stand out, and she’d be more engaged this way too.

And works very well as a good springboard for exploring the world’s cinematic greats.

And it might be that Dixieland and Yankeeland would support the Allies and Axis, and WWI would have had an American theatre, too opening in 1915 or so. And any major war fought in North America in the 20th century would totally alter the form US neo imperial power and hegemony took, if any at all, in the latter part of the 20th century.

As a minimum, a different US would alter how Versaille and Balfour treaties were made and what who agreed to.

I didn’t even mention the Second World War, because the first would’ve been different enough to make it having happened in a familiar form into unlikely.

On the one hand… First World War would’ve ended very differently.

On the other… Maybe eugenics would already be discredited by the 20s with how it went in Dixie.

OK, if you ignore the hyperbole of my pre-christmas stress aggressive start, how much of the rest do you disagree with?

Less combatitively, I’m of the stance that just make AI generated materials exempt from copyright and you’ll at least limit mass adoption in public facing things by big money. Doesn’t address all the issues, though.

If you take that image, copy it and then try to resell it for profit you’ll find you’re quickly in breach of copyright.

The LLM is, in most cases, being licensed out to users for a profit off of the input data without which it could not exist in its current form.

You could see it akin to plagiarism if you think ctrl+c, ctrl+v is too extreme.

I’m a massive nerd for level design, and in my mind massive sprawling (especially proceedurally generated) maps/levels are a scourge on modern gaming.

I don’t think it’s hugely controversial, but I view E1M1 as possibly one of the best levels ever designed. But then again I also view Doom as more like a dungeon crawler RPG that just happens to be first person and real time, so who knows?

I think I also tend to be more into simpler games than ones with too many bolted on systems, which might also be why I tend to favour older ones (or indie ones).

Maybe that’s the point? Newer Doom games aren’t especially top tier FPSs, and you can find better examples of them (Bioshock (not so modern anymore), the alien-dinosaur-robot spaceship thing, and probably others). So they don’t make the list, and then Doom holds the classic place and genre defining status. (Hexen and Strife were never gonna make the list).

I agree that Super Mario Bros could do with a new lick of paint (and think Nintendo has given it more than a few of them) to bring it up to par. Doom, I’m less sure needs updated graphics, but I don’t think it’d hurt if it kept everything else the same.

(Favourite Doom levels are probably E1M8, E2M9, and some D2 and TNT and Plutonia levels I can’t call to mind off the top of my head.)
