  • Nosing (instead of reversing) into a parking spot. You always pick the conditions of your arrival, but not always your departure. Also, reversing into traffic is ridiculous and illegal in some places. Parking nose-first is dangerous and lazy.

EDIT: Love how you’re all justifying your bad driving habits. Camera? Still can’t scan for incoming traffic. Bad weather only on occasion? It’s more than bad weather that can make reversing out of a door dangerous.

… and I HATE angle parking.

  • I second this. This sounds like older men seeking validation. I’m willing to bet that they’ve been sold on a mythical contract: “If you do X, you will have a smooth life and get respect.” Problem is, many in the public don’t believe in X or think it’s a problem, their families/wife probably doesn’t think much of them, and they haven’t had the life they thought they were entitled to. Often this crew is looking for someone to blame for the unfulfilled contract nobody ever agreed to.

I suspect they’re looking for validation (“Tell me I’m right and good.”), and you’re agreement that the people they think cheated them indeed did that and are bad/cheaters.

Old White Guys really got sold on this, “get a job, work hard, and your wife will lust after you,” false contract. That’s why they can be so hateful. It’s either find someone who stole their reward from them, or acknowledge they believed a lie.

EDIT: I don’t think you should be validating them. I believe they’re wrong, and this mentality is a problem. Life is full of adversity. Success is not facing no adversity, it’s facing it well. Also, you’re not owed anything from other people. The only solution is to focus on being excellent, believe in yourself, and choose to move on from the people and things that don’t bring you life. You can only control yourself.

  • Oh man, I think it’s the ‘e’ at the end of your name, which in a bunch of Romance languages would make it feminine. If it’s any consolation, solid men’s English names like ‘Lindsay’ and ‘Ashley’ are almost exclusively women’s names now for the same reason. (The “-y” or “-ie” marks a cutesy diminutive version, i.e. “bird” to “birdy”.)

I don’t think it’s the similarity to “Imane” (unless this is happening in your home culture) because I have never heard of that name before. However, I have seen “Imran” and I would have assumed that “Imrane” was the feminine version because of that ‘e’.

Wasn’t Imran Khan a famous cricketer?

  • The word “extreme” colours your question a fair bit. I think equality of all genders is good, I don’t think anyone should be subject to unfair treatment based on gender. As a cis-het man I like to be in a relationship with a strong woman.

However, I dated someone for a while that probably fit into the “extreme” category. It was exhausting. I sometimes felt like I couldn’t do anything without it being subjected to the question: “is this the patriarchy?” Like, she needed to hang some closet doors, had no tools, and I was like, “Oh, I can bring my drill over next week and do that!” That offer to help needed to be examined.

It also got annoying that workplace frustrations we both faced were always primarily parsed as “men being sexist” when it happened to her.

IMO often her “fierce conversations” were her being kind of dick about something.

Her model for independence and autonomy strayed very close to a refusal to take anyone else’s needs into account. Her desire to treat everyone like they were equal ignored actual power differentials and the responsibility with which they come. For example, she argued she wouldn’t put the booze away if someone she knew was an alcoholic was coming over because that would be patriarchal and robbing the alcoholic of their agency.

    It got exhausting.

  • Yes! First time I had hot pot was with a couple of exchange students. This was one of their dipping sauce ingredients. I’ve never been able to find it on my own. What’s it called? I’d take a shot at making it myself. Also, what’s the red stuff that goes in the sauce? I thought it was maybe fermented tofu. I’m pretty sure I’ve found that, but all of it has weird food coloring in it. I find I have to keep a lot of chemicals out of my food.

  • I sent my 9 year old and 8 year old to the store together to grab some milk. I could literally lean over my fence and see them the whole way there and back again. The 9 year old in particular has been chafing and asking for a bit more independence and responsibility, and by all accounts he’s quite responsible. They did a quick and good job (I didn’t want them to know I was watching for them, but peeking over the fence it was so cute seeing them running side-by-side, in-time with the shopping bag between them.)

Several people were like, “you sent your children to the store By tHeMSelVEs?!?”

Like, what part is this is so fucking ludicrous. It was two blocks. I’m like, “Do we have a problem with people running over children with their vehicles in this town? How many in the last year? 10 years? How about abductions? Lots of those? You know someone that had their children kidnapped recently?” I mean, I get that there’s always a possibility, but at what point are we damaging kids by coddling them and stifling them? I even gave them explicit instructions on what to do if an adult is being weird, tries to take them, or get them in their vehicle. Ironically, I can’t remember the last time someone freaked out because I put them in a steel box and zoomed down a winter highway at 100km/hr. I don’t want to be flippant, but I’d be surprised if the chance of being abducted was higher than the chance of choking to death eating candy. Probably more likely to get run over outside the school by some strung-out parent late to drop their kid off.

Educate me if I’m wrong, but sometimes certain risks just seem to be disproportionately weighted.
