Also, unless you are running your own Lemmy instance, I question your assumptions that using Lemmy is actually an upgrade to privacy and data ownership. I heard this point a lot and I don’t see the basis for this. Can you explain?
In terms of data privacy it would become a nightmare.
However I think Zuck would be a massive improvement over spez in terms of strategy, diplomacy, PR rizz and general chill. And this is not a very high bar.

Yep, 100% agree. Reddit’s biggest mistake this time is mishandling PR so bad that they basically gave Lemmy, kBin etc a seat at the table for free. And with the poor management at the helm, it’s going to be a pattern of bad behaviors and Reddit is bound to mess up again.
That’s one way AI-generated image leaves artifacts and clues. It could even be traces that cannot be seen by human eyes. There will be other signals and it will probably be arms race where forensics will improve, but AI will get even better, so on and so forth. Time will tell.

It’s hard to get an exact number but you can extrapolate based on the growth of Lemmy in the last few weeks. While not record-breaking, it is quite an impressive growth.
Also note that not everyone who left Reddit came to Lemmy. There is also Kbin, Tildes and alternative. Some never really left at all.
I think the real damage done to Reddit (ultimately by themselves) is showing the world that there are real alternatives (even if a bit rough around the edges). They are materializing and growing as threats and if Reddit doesn’t step up their game, they could be in some real trouble.
The other possibility is that some other company might step up and build a Reddit clone, much like what Meta’s Threads is to Twitter, once they see that there is blood in the water and a potential to displace Reddit as the “frontpage of the Internet”. Heck, even Threads is built on the Fediverse, maybe a bigcorp-backed Reddit clone might be as well.

Instance is like a server, it hosts your account and some communities.
Communities are like “subreddits”. It has to created / operated on one of the instances, but is accessible to all federated instances (which is largely the norm).
An analogy is email. You can choose your email provider (Gmail, Protonmail, Fastmail etc) and you will have an unique email address based on that provider (e.g. someguy@gmail.com is different from someguy@fastmail.com), but you will have the ability to send emails to anyone (unless you are blocked).

I just started playing Max Payne 3, which released in 2013. The game aged well, still looks great and a ton of fun.
On a related note, the Steam Deck is the perfect platform for Patient Gamers. It runs these older titles really well, and the portability + ability to suspend / resume games at any time is a game-changer (pun intended).

Death Stranding.
I’ve actually had this game kicking around for a while, never gotten into it until I got a Steam Deck this year and have not been able to put it down since.
The game really resonated with me, especially after having been through the pandemic and surviving the same isolation and longing for connection that fundamentally underpins plot of the game. The characters are amazing (great cast - Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen are just stellar in their roles), the world is vast, cinematic and often scary, and the gameplay mechanics are so deep that I’m still learning new things after 50+ hours into the game. So much to unpack. There is also a fair bit of weirdness, humor and cheese mixed in that is signature Kojima, that cracks me up once in a while.
It is truly an unique game and one of a kind experience. Nothing really like it.
I would ask a different question - is Mr. Beast a good role model for the kids or not? Whether he’s a “good person” or not is largely irrelevant, the fact is he is doing good.
Personally I’m a big fan of his philathropy, but I don’t think he makes for a good role model. He’s found a way to influence and doing good for the world, but I don’t think it’s easily replicable nor should kids try to emulate him - because to be Mr. Beast, you need to be in the influencer / clout-chasing game, which can have roads that lead to success but at the end of the day, it’s an endless game of trying to get eyeballs and capture attention.
I would encourage the kids to forge their own path and not necessarily emulate Beast, but try to make the types of impact he makes in the world.
Which is kind of my point. Even on Lemmy the “data ownership” isn’t really up to the individual users, it’s the instance owners. The only way to 100% control where your data goes (as an user) and who looks at it, is if you run your own instance. Otherwise you are still at the mercy of another master, hopefully a more benevolent one.
And if the instance that most new users default to is lemmy.world and that instance is 100K users strong, I think the “smaller instance” argument doesn’t really apply there for most users.
