I have the other perspective where I think that highly rated resellers have an incentive to share SMART results and ship good product. Perhaps its eBay centric, it has been my experience for used and refurbished electronics. If it’s any consolation, your perspective is likely what keeps the cost low for these sellers.
Is element on the main profile or are you waiting for notifications from secondary profiles? Also, might not be related, but my messaging notifications w/ GrapheneOS has gotten worse in the past week or so (Google Messaging hasn’t always alerted to new messages until I open the app and it pulls them) so it might be a Graphene thing as well.

If you are concerned about HDDs failing, I would try the nvme instead. For me, I have a 1tb external HDD connected to my server-laptop. It’s definitely an eye-sore but my server is basically on the shelf out of the way and I SSH into the server 99% of the time unless it goes down.
The HDD is not blazingly fast by any means, but I stream jellyfin videos which is great. There is maybe a 1-2 second pause before a movie starts, but there are no noticeable buffering after, even @ 1.75 speed
If you have a spare laptop/phone, I’d find a good tutorial and start there and then venture towards new hardware as your needs require it. Personally, I bought a (used) laptop when my main laptop wouldn’t boot, but then I wiped my malfunctioning laptop and it started working again. I’ve been using the used laptop as a server ever since.
Personally, I have yet to find something that I couldn’t self-host on the laptop and still don’t quite grasp why I’d need a heavier-powered device.

IIRC, the music industry was in decline long before Spotify was made. The transition period before Spotify was just illegally downloading everything through Limewire/Kazaa/Napster etc.
Also, the reason podcasts make money is because they can produce something that brings audiences in on a weekly basis. The music industry OTOH has artists that make an album a year or less. It’s not as sustainable and it’s harder to sell ads against.
I don’t think more segmentation is a wanted solution by consumers either. Consumers would much rather use one app for all platforms than have to buy a different streaming service every time they want to listen to a new album.
I can’t speak to 5G but my Mint 4G service was non-existent when I was at a concert. It was otherwise great the other 99.99% of the time fwiw. Been a user for ~7 years
Your reaction to the uncertainty that comes w/ quitting your job is normal. IMO that is the aspect to investigate and try to accept what is and what isn’t within your control

One alternative is to us SearXNG for similar functionality. The preference tabs work for them. I am using northboot.xyz and adjusted the colors and default engines but you can pick anything from searx.space

I’ve been using it. I could never get the official app to play more than one podcast in a row, yet this one does it out the book. I’m a fan altho it’s definitely still a WIP
Went down a similar rabbit hole earlier in the week. I couldn’t find a self-hosted option that met my needs re: sleek UI and integration w/ itch.io. I settled on just downloading GameHub. Not self-hosted, but it is open-source fwiw, my games are saved in an NFS folder and saves are accessible across devices.

One suggestion is to look at getting any useful docker container up and running first to get a feel for it, then pivot towards heavier lifts. Self-hosting emails is going to be a headache as others have said, and monero nodes sounds like it could be a technical as well but that’s admittedly an uneducated guess.
