If you mean “check it five seconds per day because my extended family keeps a chat hub there, and I just want to make sure no one’s reported an emergency,” then yes.

One would think that out of all countries, South Korea should be the least worried about North Korean nuclear attack. They’re next door neighbors a handful of miles apart from each other geographically, and wind exists to carry fallout right back to Kim Jong Un’s house.
Same reasons it always seems so odd whenever Russia threatens to nuke Ukraine.
My only rule for PTO days is never forget that you put in for them and accidentally go to work. So far I have a 100% success rate in avoiding that.
One of the games I picked up on Steam Sale was Cobalt Core. Fantastic game, it ate my entire Thanksgiving break lol
I’m not one to critique the actions of others, especially fictional characters… but were it me putting down an eighty lb. boulder, I’d probably drop it farther away than one micron from my toe. Just saying.
You could get a regular OLED Steam Deck and a good clean white skin and come out pretty close, except for the gray tones on the buttons and such.
If you’re in the US, I’m not sure you’re looking in the correct place?
Take that link (Steam Deck page on the Steam store), scroll down a little bit. Red banner says “On Sale Through December 4th.” To the right are the 64GB LCD Deck, which is out of stock, and the 512GB LCD Deck, which is still discounted to $336.75 and has a Buy Now button under it. I was, seconds ago, able to add it to my Steam cart and remove it.
The 64 GB version is sold out. The 512 GB is still in stock, at least it’s showing as so for me in the US.
The 512 LCD Deck is a stupidly good deal at 25% off… $330 USD is crazy cheap for a new Deck, and that’s a solid amount of starting storage space before you even move to grab an SD card.
I own both in the household, and while I do enjoy some of the OLED Deck’s improved features, the original is NOT a slouch… I wouldn’t sleep on it! The display is MUCH better than it was at launch thanks to software fixes, and the screen can safely be overclocked from the base 60 Hz up to to 70 Hz with minimal effort, further reducing the gap between the models (OLED is 90 Hz) and allowing clean locking to 35 FPS, a great balance point for smoothness vs battery use.
Since I own both, I can tell you what you’d mainly be missing taking the LCD: basically you’d giving up battery length (OLED is about 25% better on battery life… but the whole issue is mute if you primarily play older games, or mostly play while plugged in), about a half inch of diagonal screen real estate, plus you’re taking a somewhat less precise touch screen, and taking a slightly older Bluetooth adapter in the unit. In exchange for this, you get a new Deck for more than $200 less than the base OLED will cost.
Otherwise, these two are very similar, so it’s a very good time to get a Deck.
Speaking on ads, they are definitely one of the leaders in this category.
I can honestly say that there have been maybe a half-dozen or so ads I’ve encountered in my entire life span that introduced a product into my awareness, that I later looked into and decided to purchase.
And for that microscopic amount of success for the advertisers, I have been exposed to tens of millions of ads over my life span (mid-40s now). All of those hammering on your mood and/or sanity, some worse than others, but every one a punch of annoyance.
AI is improving in this regard. With the right set up, you’re having conversations with a grammatically native speaker who isn’t a real person, but who will talk as long as you want and gently correct and teach you without judgment as you go. May be worth checking out.
Like others, I’d rather see a Steam Deck Controller than an actual Steam Controller 2 that’s heavily based on the original. But they’d probably sell a bazillion of either.
Imagine acting like everyone in England has the same accent. The only thing more ridiculous would be saying that everyone in the US does.
Something else to consider is that it’s a wonderful social window if you have friends that you don’t get to hang out with very often due to geography and life.
I have a couple of good friends who are too far away after I moved to another area. We play games online and have a nice social hangout for a few hours each Saturday. Voice chatting works great.
It’s fantastic to be able to regularly spend time with them.
Which is absolutely wild to me, considering that all natively born citizens received their citizenship involuntarily at birth.
Not a smoker myself, but I can tell you what worked for my brother when he quit in college.
AC went out in his dorm during an August heat wave, and it took forever for them to fix it. He decided that it would be a perfect time to go cold turkey, since he’d be so miserable from the heat that the few days of nicotine withdraw wouldn’t really be comparably bad. And he said it was right, he didn’t think about it during the worst part, and by the time they fixed the AC, he was 90% of the way through the process.
So if you live in one of the parts of the world moving to summer right now, it might be worth a shot.
Or at 720p, as this is a 16:9 aspect ratio, and running stuff on it at 16:10 will look weird.
Yep, precisely why I don’t play kernel anticheat games.
Considering 99.9999% of all the games out there don’t have it, and I have a selection of games large enough to last a lifetime, I don’t lose sleep over that decision.
A thing to do: Look up how to install Nested Desktop into Gaming Mode (a quick YouTube video will show you how to set it up in about two minutes). In short, it allows you to access most of the functionality of Desktop Mode when you need those things, without actually having to officially switch over (think of it as Gaming Mode’s Desktop Mode Emulator).
Saves you bunches of time in the switching back and forth, as it’s almost instantaneous. I use it all the time, as stuff like web browsers also work better on the Desktop side.
As for casual games you can play for short bursts and put to sleep whenever… you already mentioned Balatro, that’s a great one. I love roguelikes and deck builders for this purpose in general. Recently, I’ve been playing a ton of Cobalt Core, I’d highly recommend as a great pick up and play and quick stop.
