There is no algorithm spying on you across the web and recording your actions and behavior to try and force you to engage with an automated sub-optimal content stream, you have to manually curate your own (hopefully optimal) content stream, which you then engage with. That’s basically the difference between Mastodon and the rest of them.

I have been on Mastodon almost daily for 5 years, and I’ve got absolutely no idea how you have found “all the edgy fascists” on there. I mean sure, if your only experience is on truth.social i expect you’d see that type of content and nothing else. But besides truth.social, I don’t really know where you’d manage to dig it up. Must be hard work lol.

the real problem is moving from twitter (x), to twitter (bluesky). expecting it to be better/different. just like all these people currently running from facebook to band.

i mean. we here on lemmy already did this. we went from digg to reddit, we learned our lesson, and came to lemmy. so to constantly advertise bluesky makes absolutely no sense. albeit i guess it’s the same principle, people of twitter need to experience enshitification of bluesky before they learn and settle on the fediverse.

I keep extinct in the wild and critically endangered species of fish in my aquariums and am a member of a couple of fish focused associations who work with universities for the goal of preservation of species. been considering getting into red listed frogs and cactus, but the communities are smaller (so less access to species) and space is a premium when living in an apartment.

i wish there was more exposure of this hobby because it’s such an affordable, easy and “low effort” thing to do, but a lot of people who care about the environment and animals basically get offended when you keep animals “locked up” in an aquarium. in my opinion, serious aquarists (not the pet store furniture mentality) are invaluable, as a lot of species has been saved from extinction through aquarist efforts and university collaboration to reintroduce them to their native ranges after restoration work is completed (at least Lenoardo DiCaprio made a little bit of social media impact for one of the associations in 2022).

I should add, overfishing is not the leading cause for extinction in freshwater fish, it’s pollution from agriculture, as the vast majority of fish threatened with extinction have no utility to us (or bright enough colors to benefit the commercial pet trade - brightly colored species are generally not even found in the wild, and have their colors from decades of selective breeding by dedicated aquarists).

You’re not looking at the cost of living. your actual income is usually irrelevant. you could be making $100-250k, it doesn’t matter, if the cost of living (and being able to actually get to your job) is 95% of that income.

For example, my buddy moved to the UK from BA where he was making $8000/mo and living paycheck to paycheck and going into debt. they didn’t tell him they would cut his salary down to $4500/mo until he actually got there. He had a panic attack, until his first set of bills arrived, and he realized he still had some 80% of his paycheck left for himself due to drastically lower cost of living.

not even “still on facebook”, since 2020, the surge of people moving TO facebook instead of away of facebook has increased tremendously.

the traditional second hand market sites are dying because facebook marketplace is taking over.

traditional websites and helpdesk/support channels are dying because companies are switching to facebook pages and messenger/whatsapp.

old school forums have more or less been entirely replaced by facebook groups.

alternative chat platforms have more or less died because of messenger.

branding is nearly gone everywhere and has been replaced by instagram.

the list goes on.

and imo the worst part is, facebooks policy and technical offering is inferior to the alternatives people are moving away from. and the only reason everyone is moving to facebook is because everyone is moving to facebook.

the day Mastodon offers Groups, I will be advertising the move to Mastodon and shortly shut down the groups I run. Though, Groups was supposed to be out already last year and yet we’re in 2024 and nothing is happening. If they had managed to stick to schedule it would have been a golden opportunity because a lot of people were looking for alternatives (but found none), when facebook went ham on their policy. but as there was no alternatives, everyone’s back on facebook just circumventing the policies (for now).

honestly, mistborn isn’t very good and there is no reason you can’t just immediately jump on stormlight. yes, there are tons of references and characters which does make stormlight awesome because you’ll go “omg no way! it’s HIM!”, but it isn’t strictly necessary because stormlight doesn’t actually assume you’ve read the previous cosmere books (few exceptions where brandon just teases too much it takes away from the plot, i.e. the mysterious scarf wearing woman. yes, we get it, it’s the princess from warbreaker, and she’s looking for one of the gods from warbreaker, that we’re also familiar with, and the god in turn is looking for his weapon). but ultimately these characters have their own story arcs and most of them aren’t immediately important to the plot and more like easter eggs.

now, i should point out that … i really don’t care for mistborn. and for now, it doesn’t matter. but after the next stormlight book, there will be an in-world timeskip, and then another 3-6 mistborn books, and then both the mistborn series and the stormlight series become one joint series.

but there is really no reason to read stormlight before mistborn in its current state because the only real way you’ll know for sure one of the hidden characters in stormlight is a particularly well loved character from mistborn is if you read the wiki. there is also a guest appearance of another character in i think the first book but it doesn’t make sense in the timeline and it’s inconsequential to the plot in every way.

well for one thing, one of the big bads in stormlight happens to die in mistborn.

google and microsoft don’t have browsers; they are offering a repacked and rebranded chromium with proprietary features. same as vivaldi, brave, etc.

there are only three modern browsers: firefox, safari, and chromium. if these three exit france, all that’s left are custom made third party neutered firefox or chromium browsers repacked for france, and they would lag behind security updates.

i don’t see the problem. just don’t make your browser available in france? there’s only 3 browsers to pick from anyway, firefox, safari, or chromium-based. if everyone makes themselves unavailable in france, what is france going to do? heck, iphones only have safari. the people would be pretty quick to burn down paris (as is tradition) when the web becomes unavailable.
