After the Ford’s Jim Farley accuses the United Auto Workers union of wanting to bankrupt his company, labor leader Shawn Fain launches a historic strike of all three Detroit carmakers.
Jim, Jim, Jim… They don’t “want more than schoolteachers and firemen get.” They want a fair wage. The fact that firemen and school teachers aren’t getting a fair wage either is another problem entirely, and while it shouldn’t weigh in to your choice to pay a living wage to your employees, it should carry some weight in your day to day life. Be better, Jim. Don’t be a dick.
It’s funny… When I hear the Ford CEO criticize UAW for striking to make more than the people we universally recognize as being grossly underpaid, it only reveals that UAW is already making even less than the people we universally recognize as being grossly underpaid. Thus loudly justifying their strike.
Right, gaslighting CEOs not being dicks, that’s the day hell freezes over.
Jim knows where the money they’re requesting will come from.
And ole Jimmy doesn’t wanna stop getting his balls tickled by million dollar bills.
It’s not just the CEOs, it’s the shareholders taking the lions share of the profit as well. Workers have been left behind when the efficiency of a company has been calculated and the benefits of the labour have been divided.
Yep. A giant reason for this whole mess is that the only real representation at the top of corporations are for the shareholders. Executives are elected by the board to do one thing: serve a fiduciary duty to the shareholders.
Workers might be lucky enough to be fed scraps of equity, but even that is rare now.
Not too long ago, corporate leaders in the US had a sense of dignity. They were always better off than most workers, but not by this level. Paying a fair wage to the labor that created the wealth was an intelligent and respected decision.
But a new generation came to power and has changed the whole game. Allowed and even celebrated greed. And instead of taking action to stop this, regulations have become more relaxed and allowed worker rights to erode.
Yadda yadda ….And the shareholders are your pension fund after everyone has had their cut , so where are you going to break the cycle ?
You start by paying people properly, and allowing them to lead meaningful lives.
Kinda also an indictment of how much we pay teachers and firefighters.
Just sayin’.
But if we pay the teachers more then we have to raise taxes and then we have to pay everybody else more and that would really cut into our profit margins which would upset the shareholders.
Better if we just didn’t educate the children.
Unless they go to private school, of course. Those kids are the future, after all.
Also worth mentioning one additional thing. Those shareholders are often not just rich people but also people like you and I investing in our 401K, RRSP, GIC, etc.
It’s a royal “we” problem and this is where you get the fingers in the ears and the downvotes because of ignorance.
Yes, rich people are a problem but the system on a whole that we all take advantage of is broken. We need to start thinking differently.
The issue is Republicans hate people and liberals want the privilege without sacrificing anything. You can’t fix that.
That’s. 03% of Ford’s profit pay year. That’s really not that much for a CEO .
