My favorite is when they put the bike lane in the middle of the street between the right and left vehicle traffic lanes. I feel so safe with murder machines on both sides of me!

D.C. has this with four lanes on each side and near highway speeds and people with domestic immunity zipping around through traffic. It’s nuts!

Made come back to reddit (ew!) to get this saved comment

        Nah.

Car drivers break the law slightly more than cyclists, with a far greater toll.

This separate study came to the same conclusion:

Cyclists Break Far Fewer Road Rules Than Motorists, Finds New Video Study

        And this study:

Cyclists Are More Law-Abiding Than Drivers

Also car drivers cause the vast majority of accidents between bikes and cars.

Four in every five crashes between cars and bicycles caused by driver of car

This seperate study in Melbourne came to the same conclusion:

        https://www.bikeradar.com/news/drivers-at-fault-in-majority-of-cycling-accidents/

In 88.9% of cases, the cyclist had been travelling in a safe/legal manner prior to the collision/near miss. Most happened at or near a junction (70.3%) and most were caused by sudden lane changes by the motorist, with sideswipe the most frequent cause (40.7%).

And this one carried out on behalf of the Department of Transport in London:

        https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/dec/15/cycling-bike-accidents-study

With adult cyclists, police found the driver solely responsible in about 60%-75% of all cases, and riders solely at fault 17%-25% of the time.

And this study by The City of Westminster Council:

        https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/crashes-involving-bikes-mostly-drivers-fault-9s2ssx06vn9

The City of Westminster Council found that drivers were to blame for 68 per cent of collisions between cyclists and motor vehicles in the borough in the past 12 months. It found that cyclists were at fault for only 20 per cent. In the remaining 12 per cent of cases, no cause could be found or both parties were to blame.

And one from Bavaria, Germany. In 2013-2016,

In car-bike collisions, the car was at fault 75% of the time In semi-bike collisions, the semi was at fault 80% of the time

So that’s five separate studies in different cities and countries, using different methodologies, all coming to the same conclusion.

        Cheers.

hardly surprising, there’s much less incentive to break road rules when you’re completely vulnerable to everyone around you and balanced on 2 wheels.

@marmo7ade @queermunist Who is “they” here? Cyclists?

Plenty of cars don’t stop for stop signs and traffic lights too. At least around all the crossings near where I live. Now, it’s possible that there are timing issues, but AFAICS the mentality is it’s okay to keep going as long as the car in front of me is moving. Regardless of the state of the lights.

Thats how I embedded it, does it appear weird for you? I’m on kbin if that might be the problem

It looks like a regular hyperlink, you need to tap it to see the picture. For embedded pictures you leave the alt text blank. Also no you stay on the same direction as cars. The problem is this bike crossing doesn’t lead anywhere, there is no bike lane coming this direction. And you should typically ride to the right of cars but it might be ok to be on the other curb when it’s a one-way street like this.

Thanks! I moved the alt-text, hope it works now!
The bike crossing leads to a bike lane going eastbound on E Broadway, it comes from a one way street with no bike-lane. It’s on the wrong side since it’s only for bikers turning left, bikers turning right will continue on the right shoulder of the lane.

Still dumb but the only real problem I have with it is that bikes are expected to cross 6 lanes of traffic going who knows how fast with no stop light.

Edit: added a few lines to the sketch in my earlier comment to better show what I’m meaning, maybe

The part that makes me feel least safe is the brief shared space with cars going between two bike lanes. To continue along the greenway from Victoria, you need to cross and do a ~50m stretch along Broadway, cars bearing down behind you. And the right turn off is not obvious - I missed it the first time I went. It’s not at all clear where the path continues.

edit: fine, I suppose the un-controlled six-lane crossing is also pretty bad…

you forgot the exclamation mark from the front of your image embed. the syntax is kinda confusing, [this is a link](image_url), ![this is an image](image_url)

also, i’m no expert in bike lanes, but it seems to me that the original idea here was that the bikes would go onto the wide sidewalk over here, but that doesn’t seem to be very well-communicated. where i live (budapest) we have some sidewalk-bike lane combos, but they’re marked, and when they’re not, pedestrians have a priority and sidewalks can be frustrating for cyclists.

Cars can’t actually drive down this road anymore. The only vehicle traffic allowed through this area is busses turning around and taking their breaks at the end of the line.

I guess you can technically access parts of this road through the alley way but there are definitely bollards up at the Broadway end and the other end is right turn only for busses. This area is not high vehicle traffic

The only arrow on there that looks intentful is the vertical blue arrow. Everything else is just regular stroad, and their threshold for a bicycle “”“way”" being unsafe is apparently when it starts perpendicularly crossing four lanes of traffic at once. And even then it only deserves a partial coat of paint ending in a 90° turn into a bicycle gutter.

That’s not “designed”, that’d be an insult to road design&engineering. That’s a council member who took an exasperated sigh, angrily drew a straight line on a google earth printout, and said “now stop bothering me with this fucking cycling nonsense, I am already late for my kids’ soccer match”.

It looks like the eastern road has a bike lane, and western road does not. Are bikes allowed to go both directions (one against traffic) in a bike lane? I guess I need more information on how this works. Here’s how my brain interprets it.

    https://pub.xhci.com/bike-lane.png

From the top-view, the eastern bike lane seems kind of unintuitive, but it’s clearly marked from the street: https://pub.xhci.com/bike-lane-streetview.png

From another post, the lat/lon appears to be here: 49.262344, -123.066766

This community exists for the following reasons:

  • to raise awareness around the dangers, inefficiencies and injustice that can come from car dependence.
  • to allow a place to discuss and promote more healthy transport methods and ways of living.

You can find the Matrix chat room for this community here.

Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn’t choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don’t use slurs. You can laugh at someone’s fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don’t post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn’t a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.
