Let’s not beat around the bush, or indulge in unnecessary drama: I’m moving to another instance and Patient Gamers needs a new main mod.

Even though I’ve neglected it (the initial plan was to play things by ear for a few days, and accordingly give shape to the place afterwards), this community has attracted a good number of subscribers, it has potential if put in good hands. Hence why I’d rather give the keys to someone else than close, or abandon, it at the same time as my account.

Edit: I appreciate those mentioning that I could mod from another account, but I have no desire to remain involved with this instance in any way.

Edit2: V0.18 is here; time for a coin toss!

Without looking to chum the thread with drama, is there a particular reason you’re able to share for leaving this instance, i.e. anything users should know of?

In short, it results from the recent drama about defederating exploding-heads, an alt-right instance. Some say that we should expose ourselves to diverse opinions, and I don’t see any such value in disinformation and hatred.

Those people seem to have won that case, or are numerous enough to prevent an absolute majority decision, and a few of them are set to become moderators of The Agora, our place to discuss and vote on sh.itjust.works related issues.

Yikes. Suddenly I’m more understanding of beehaw defederating from sh.itjust.works.

Beehaw has plans to refederate with us, the problem was the open sign up policy, not who sh.itjust.works federated with.

More specifically, it was worried about moderation, and the signup policy was their preferred way to handle that. If moderation tools get better, then the signup policy could be relaxed on their end.

Even so, I just unsubbed from communities over there and found others to scratch the same itch. So whatever floats their boat I guess.

I don’t really understand OP’s choice, but it’s theirs to make, not mine. I personally just sub to communities I’m interested in and ignore the rest, and that seems to work pretty well.

This is unrelated and we are going to face a similar decision to beehaw’s soon as well (or we already are, considering I saw at least one post about it)

As someone who can only get online sporadically, thank you for this update on the state of affairs … I hedges my bets a bit with logins here and Beehaw, but so far this site does appear to be vulnerable to negative posters to me too!

Maybe I’ll see you there :-)

I don’t mod any big communities here yet but I’d be more than happy to help out this one. I’ve been subbed to the subreddit equivalent for years so I know the content well enough, and you can stay as mod in the background and I’ll happily resign from the position if you don’t like how I’ve handled it.

Knowing the in and outs of the seminal subreddit is definitely a plus! The secretary has your number, we’ll recontact you 😋 (just waiting a bit before making a decision; patient till the end!)

Awesome! I’m patient too, don’t worry :) I’d be happy to have a back and forth with you too, if you wanted me to know anything in particular about modding your community. The last thing I’d want is to run it to the ground. Feel free to message me any time, or I can shoot you my discord if you’re interested

I’ve always been quite refractory to Discord. My time with Skype remains my last actualization in terms of chat app (yes, my cave is comfy, thank you! Quite cool too, in this weather).

Really, the only way you could go wrong would be by making this a current gaming news-following community.

Just to mention it, the way I saw things would have been to adopt basic structural rules similar to those of the subreddit, i.e., a focus on discussion and avoiding discussing games from a defined time period. From then I would have wished to let users decide the modalities of application, as well as letting them give their input on subsequent rules (about recommendation requests, spoilers, etc…) I think that would’ve been in the spirit of the host-instance.

You could just subscribe to the Patient Gamers community on whatever instance you move to, you wouldn’t need to keep your sh.itjust.works account or anything.

That’s something I do not want. for reasons I’ve briefly evoked, I have no desire to remain involved with this instance in any way.

It’s something I should probably mention in the OP, as there’s a few people that offered me similar advice already.

I’ve just caught up on your other comments, and thanks for that proof in one of them. I knew your instance had some issues, but I hadn’t realized it had gotten that bad. Best of luck with whatever instance you decide to move to.

If you’re going to a different instance, you can still mod this community with your account from there.
